League triumph rewards Pershore Ladies' consistency

PERSHORE Ladies are celebrating after winning the Midlands Ladies’ Touch League (MLTL) South West (SW) Championship thanks to a clean sweep of victories at all four of the nine-team SW regional tournaments.

Their victory at the final SW tournament on Sunday at Drybrook in Gloucestershire gave them a maximum season’s total of 40 points – five ahead of runners-up Ledbury.

Bredon were third, Drybrook fourth, Luctonians fifth, Ross sixth, Berry Hill and Brecon 1 joint seventh and Brecon 2 ninth.

“We are all simply elated,” said Pershore Ladies’ coach Alice Keylock. “We have had a lot of new players join the ladies team this season, but they have gelled really well, learned quickly and they have really proved that having fun is the route to success.”

Those who featured in the victorious squad are Sian White, Emmie Bewley, Emma Field, Rachel Griffiths, Louisa Gardiner, Natalie Bewley, Vicki Gwilliam, Jess Wheway, Clare Kinahan, Sarah Thomas, Mel Curnock, Kat Williams, Harriet Grant, Evie Woodfield, Nadia White, Jules McLeod and Poppy Riddleston.

Pershore Ladies have one more tournament to play before the end of the 2018 season – the Midlands-wide final at Kidderminster RFC on Sunday – when tap-off will be at 2pm and play will continue until approximately 5pm. Spectators are welcome, free of charge.

Touch training for women and men takes place at Pershore RFC every Wednesday at 7.30pm and Sunday at 10am. Anyone aged 13 and over can come along and have a go and the first three sessions are free. Contact Fizz Bewley on 01905 381080 for details.

The MLTL has grown massively in the last year and 18 women’s teams and nearly 200 women now play regularly. The league is divided into two regions – North East and South West – each of which hosts five regional league tournaments in the season, which runs from March to November, to find their regional champion.

Four all-team ‘Super Sunday’ tournaments – three in the summer and a final in the autumn – then decide the overall MLTL winners.
