Lawrence and Hill called up for England camp

WARRIORS’ pair Ollie Lawrence and Ted Hill have been called up by England head coach Eddie Jones for a three-day training camp at the Lensbury Club in London.

Centre Lawrence is uncapped but has been involved in an England training squad before in the summer of 2018 when he was invited to a camp in Brighton ahead of the tour to South Africa while he was still a member of the Three Pears Warriors Academy.

Club captain Hill already has a senior cap to his name, having made his debut as a replacement against Japan at Twickenham in November 2018, and was also involved in camps during the Guinness Six Nations earlier this year.

Both Lawrence and Hill were in sparkling for Warriors after the 2019/20 Gallagher Premiership season resumed following the COVID-19 lockdown in August and were widely tipped to be selected by Jones in the squad preparing to face the Barbarians in a non-cap match at Twickenham on Sunday, October 25.

But they were not included in the initial training squad announced by England last week because of the possibility that they may have been required to play in the postponed Premiership fixture at Sale Sharks, a match that was subsequently cancelled and forfeited by Sale because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

Lawrence and Hill are among 26 players named by Jones for the camp which finishes on Saturday (October 17), 12 of whom are uncapped.

“We had a good three day camp last week working on the basics and developing our cohesion as a group, Jones said.

“This week the focus is to raise the standard as we continue our preparation for the Italy game.”

England have six upcoming fixtures this autumn starting with the Quilter Cup against the Barbarians followed by a trip to Rome to face Italy on October 31 in the final round of the delayed  2020 Guinness Six Nations.

England will then play four matches as part of the Autumn Nations Cup. Quilter Internationals at Twickenham against Georgia (November 14), and Ireland (November 21) an away match against Wales on November 28 and a return to Twickenham for a placing match to determine final position in the competition  on December 6.
