ONE of the leading events for club golfers in Great Britain and Ireland was on the menu for 40 Broadway Golf Club ladies in the shape of their Peugeot LGU Coronation Foursomes match.
With the overhang of the previous day’s storms and a tricky wind to contend with, conditions were tough, but the ladies relished the challenge.
Winners on the day were Jude Vidler and Ange Sollis with an impressive 33 points and they now qualify for one of 16 area finals.
Second with 31 points were Henrietta Cooke and Irene Hawkes, ahead of third placed Nadine Simpkin and Valerie Steven on countback.
At the weekend Broadway’s mixed teams competed in the prestigious Rummer Cup, for which the weather was much-improved and there were definite signs of summer in the air as the 20 pairs did battle in the foursomes strokeplay competition.
Presented by a visiting Dutch couple in 1969, the Rummer Cup was so called because of its shape – that of a drinking cup as featured in a painting by renowned Dutch artist Frans Hals.
On one of the warmest days of the year so far, teams thoroughly enjoyed their matches and scores were impressive.
Ian Mann and Barb Buggin claimed victory with 71.5 nett and runners-up were Les and Annabelle Carter with 73.5, with Les also achieving a spectacular hole-in-one on the par 3 8th.
Peter Azizi and Emma Whiston joined forces to finish third with 76.
