It's a scramble for success at Broadway

BROADWAY Golf Club opened its doors to members and visitors from across the county for its annual Christmas Scramble.

Some 120 eager competitors representing 21 clubs arrived early morning to enjoy a banquet breakfast before their 10am shotgun start.

The weather was kind with just a little wind to contend with as teams embarked upon their 18-hole challenge. All took their drives and then selected the best of the four shots to play forward.

The person whose drive was chosen then dropped out for the next shot, with the format repeated until the ball was down the hole.

With winter playing conditions almost perfect, there was ample opportunity for some excellent scoring and it was visiting team John Nixon, Richard Frost, Simon Tully and Kevin Connor from Glen Gorse Golf Club in Leicestershire who made the most of the superb course conditions to bring in a remarkable 58 nett and achieve a clear first place.

Three of Broadway’s teams were among the prize-winners including runners-up Phil Bennett, Neville Jelfs and father and son Bernie and Duncan Beale who scored an impressive 64.4.

Also enjoying their home turf were third placed Mark Dufty, Paul Miller, Phil Adey and Malcolm Pratt who did well to earn a nett 64.5, ahead of fourth placed Bernard and Debbie Donoghue and team-mates Jan and Jim Titley who brought in a commendable 64.7.

Jon Hawthorne and his catering team at Fayreways had been busy preparing a sumptuous Christmas dinner for all to enjoy before the winners were presented with their fabulous hampers and festive treats for the Christmas season.
