Humpton and Sutherland team up to win Broadway's foursomes trophy

MIKE Humpston and eight-year-old James Sutherland teamed up to win Broadway GC’s Adult Junior Foursomes Trophy at the weekend.

‘Storm Brian’ failed to prevent a great turn out for the competition, with 18 pairs vying for the prestigious salver, which was purchased in 2011 with a donation by four visiting members of Surbiton Golf Club, a fellow 1895 Centenary Club.

Despite the wild conditions, there were some impressive scores returned.

Humpston and Sutherland stormed in with a magnificent 41 points to give them a clear lead ahead of Stephen Moore and Max Carter along with Dave Coleman and Ambrose Eaves.

The latter pairs both earned an excellent 40 points to take second and third.

Richard Preen and Kieran Nelhams, Dan Eaves and Ryan Wright and Bernard Donoghue and Sonny Nangle filled fourth to sixth places, each scoring an admirable 39 points.

n Annabelle Carter took first place as Broadway Ladies took to the course with just three clubs and a putter to contest the Margaret Roberts Trophy.

Donated in 1961 in her year as Ladies Captain, Margaret originally stipulated that it should be just two clubs and a putter but over the years, ladies found this too challenging and in 2005 it was changed to allow one extra club.

Carter clearly made some excellent choices with her clubs as she brought in an outstanding winning score of 36 points.

Ladies Captain, Brenda Corfield, was a close second with a superb 34.

Andi Stedman earned a worthy third place with 33 points with fourth place going to Fran Andrews (31 pts).
