THE inaugural game on Pershore Hockey Club’s new home pitch saw the sport return to the town for the first time in 33 years.

Pershore’s veterans team took on Worcester Vets on their new pitch at Pershore High School which marked the first time Pershore and District Sports Club’s hockey section have played in the town itself.

And Pershore made home advantage count, securing a memorable 4-1 victory thanks to goals from Ali Sanderson, Ant Pratley, Graham Handley and Stuart Bearcroft.

Various dignitaries were in attendance including Mayor Coun Richard Grantham along with a number of former players and club officials to commemorate the occasion.

The game began at a frantic pace as both teams spurned opportunities to break the deadlock while Worcester showcased their experience with some neat passing moves.

Pershore eventually opened the scoring through Sanderson who finished well on the rebound after Worcester goalkeeper Reg Sharratt kept out his initial effort.

And Pratley doubled Pershore’s lead with a sublime finish from a difficult angle before Handley scored a sensational solo goal and Bearcroft made it four with a stylish finish.

Worcester’s Chris Copson pulled a goal back for the visitors but the game belonged to Pershore who produced an excellent display with Rob Curley, Mike Handley, Paul Murphy, Jonnie Martin, Ben Martin, Russ McGettigan and John Senior all impressing.
