Highs and lows for Canning at Oulton Park

EVESHAM’S Martyn Canning experienced mixed fortunes at the fourth round of the British Racing and Sports Car Club Mazda MX-5 Championships at Oulton Park.

Canning had never race at the Cheshire venue before and qualifying went well but, with having to learn a new track from scratch with no practice, he made it into race 1B in in 11th place.

The race started well and Canning made his way up to third but he was taken out and dropped to 17th on the grid.

As the race went on he worked his way up to fifth place and just missed out being moved up to race 2A by one place, although he did record the fastest lap in race 1B.

Canning started fifth on the grid for race 2B and within two laps he was second on the grid and stayed there until the finish, but sadly he was handed a five-second penalty for ‘track limits’ and this dropped him to fourth place overall.

Canning returns to action at his ‘local’ Donington Park track over the August Bank Holiday and has experience on this track on both four and two wheels so will be hoping for good results.

He would like to thank Clarkson & Evans, SW&A Accountancy and J&D Roofing for their support and fellow driver Matt Simmonite for giving Canning his spare brake pads after the Evesham man had suffered a brake failure in qualifying.

The Cannings are also attending the Hampton Ferry Show on August 7 with the car and a raffle will be held offering the chance to win a pair of tickets for Donington Park, your name or message on the car, a magnum of Prosecco and car cleaning gift box.

This is a great day out for the family between 11am and 4pm.
