BRETFORTON Ladies 2nds were far from disgraced, but table-topping Cirencester 2nds proved too strong as they secured a 5-1 away victory on Saturday.
The visitors took a tenth-minute lead in this West Clubs Women’s Hockey League Severn Division Two match but Bretforton regrouped and some good attacking play from Kim Payne on the right and Rosemary Logan on the left created chances.
With a swift counter-attack Cirencester broke away and, with keeper Linda Bell beaten, Andrea Cole’s foot stopped the ball on the line.
However, the resultant penalty flick was converted.
Good play from Payne resulted in a short corner for Bretforton and a well worked routine baffled the visiting defence, allowing swift passing from Emma Lowe to set up Ness Dufty to fire home.
Bretforton defended heroically as Amy Ball, Nat Benwell, Jess Hadley and Andrea Cole all put in a great shift, whilst Lucy Cole and Rosie Zubek up front worked tirelessly.
However, Cirencester struck three more times to put the outcome beyond doubt.
Bretforton’s player of the match was Andrea Cole who gave everything to create and support attacking moves.
Bretforton finish the season with a visit to Newent 3rds on March 25.
The first team were beaten 2-0 by visitors Wootton Bassett in the North Division. The Pink Ladies host Leominster in a key fixture in their penultimate game of the season on March 25.
