EVESHAM GOLF CLUB members gathered to watch John Jones drive-in as the club’s new captain for 2022.
Jones has been a member at Evesham for over 20 years and drove three balls of the first tee to mark his reign as captain.
Sticking to tradition, members gathered themselves on the first fairway to face Jones as he teed off in sunny and windy conditions.
And the member who is standing closest to each of Jones’ drives picks up the ball and presents it to the captain to win a prize.
Jones then produced a sublime opening tee shot which flew straight over the heads of the members who duly applauded his effort.
His other two drives ventured slightly left and right of the middle of the fairway – after a buggy had driven off to find the first ball.
Jones said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated and voted in by all the members, it’s a lovely club.
“Everybody knows each other, it’s a really friendly club, new members in the club are always very welcome and always really well-integrated.
“The main role as captain is to make sure the club runs smoothly but that everybody who is involved in it, gets what they want out of it, it’s something for everybody.
“The good thing about golf is that you can be of any ability and still play with golfers of a much better ability because of the handicap system, it’s unique like that.
“It’s a very inclusive sport and nowadays, whilst there is an expense to it, it’s not like it used to be traditionally, we’ve got people from every walk of life here and a lot of that is down to it being a small and very friendly club.”
The club was founded in 1894, 128 years ago, and members will no doubt be looking forward to the new season with Jones at the helm as captain.
