THE EVESHAM College football team are celebrating after clinching the league title in dramatic fashion.
The Evesham team – part of the Warwickshire College Group – have enjoyed a fine season, topping the table from the start of the campaign in September through to the last game.
In their last game of the season Birmingham Metropolitan College, who play out of Kidderminster, had an opportunity to win the league on goal difference, but only if they scored 13 goals.
In a nail-biting finale, Birmingham Met scored 12 goals in their game against Walsall, leaving them level with Evesham on points and goal difference.
However, Evesham narrowly took the title on countback, winning by seven goals to six.
Evesham College are coached by Paddy Mullen, a former professional with West Bromwich Albion, Worcester City and Hereford United who has spent 12 years in football management, including a Champions League adventure with Barry Town when they reached the first round proper before losing to Porto in a televised game.
Mullen said: “The boys have worked hard and it is an amazing achievement for such a small college to win the league.
“I want to thank the team and also Lee Perry, who heads up sport at Evesham College, for his support throughout the season and for negotiating for us the use of the superb facilities at Evesham United.”
