Frosty conditions for Winter League contests

A BITTERLY cold morning greeted Broadway Golf Club’s ladies as they ventured out to complete the fourth round of their Winter League contest.

Despite the icy wind, the course remained in top condition and provided the 16 pairs with some excellent scoring opportunities in the Foursomes challenge.

Linda Carruthers and Liz Smith made the most of those chances and were victorious on the day with a fine 32 points over 16 holes.

Close behind were second placed Brenda Whittingham and Fran Andrews with 31 points, ahead of Patricia Trahar and Julia Fortescue who edged into third place with a deserved 30.

Kate Bellamy and partner Irene Hawkes clinched a worthy fourth place with 28 points.

At the weekend, it was the sixth round of the men’s Winter League which brought Broadway’s competitors out on a day of similar conditions.

After a hard frost, the sun did make a brief appearance but temperatures remained low and, with winter greens all round, conditions were tricky.

Unperturbed by the cold, the 56 pairs rose to the challenge in their Fourball Betterball match, with all keen to improve their positioning in the overall league table.

Paul Archer and partner John Wayland found tremendous form to top the pile with 48 points.

Second were Noel Hughes and Tom Roberts with 47 points in front of Mick Sandalls and Paul Walker in third with 46.

Will Livens and Paul Whelan also scored 46 but were edged into fourth on countback.

Both groups now look forward to their penultimate rounds which take place in early February.
