FOOTBALL - Evesham United have penalty saved in Melksham defeat

EVESHAM United had a penalty saved as they were beaten 1-0 by Melksham Town to extend their winless run to five matches.

United’s Jack Horrell had a first-half spot kick saved as Luke Ballinger’s goal shortly before the break proved decisive at The Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium.

The result leaves Evesham in 14th place in the Southern League Division One South table.

United created the game’s first chance when Dan Djurovic went on a fine solo run only for his low cross into the box to be missed by everyone in red and white.

And Evesham were awarded a penalty on 37 minutes only for Melksham goalkeeper Emmanuel Idem to make the save from Horrell’s effort.

Swindon Town loanee Idem then made another excellent stop to deny Brandon Smalley’s goalbound effort as Evesham pressed for an opener.

However, Ballinger broke the deadlock at the end of the first half when he finished from close range to leave Lewis Clayton in the United goal with no chance.

And Idem produced more heroics to keep out Kyle Belmonte’s effort in the second period as the two teams struggled to create a clear-cut opening.

Evesham are next in action away at Plymouth Parkway on Tuesday, April 5 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Bolitho Park.
