FOOTBALL - Evesham United forced to go through play-offs after final day defeat

EVESHAM United must go through the play-offs after losing 2-1 at home against Bashley on the final day of the season.

The Robins surrendered an early lead as Levi Steele’s 10th-minute goal proved in vain at the Spiers and Hartwell Stadium.

Evesham knew only a win would give them any chance of lifting the title. The Robins also needed league leaders Yate Town to lose their game against Didcot Town.

However, Yate’s 1-0 victory meant Evesham could do nothing to stop the Gloucestershire club from winning the title.

It means Evesham finish the Southern League Division One South season as runners-up.

The Robins will host fifth-place Exmouth Town in the play-off semi-finals.

Evesham made the perfect start as Steele controlled a cross from the left before firing a low shot across goal into the bottom right corner.

However, Bashley equalised on 28 minutes when Lewis Ross sent Alex Harris the wrong way from the penalty spot.

And the visitors completed the turnaround in first-half injury time as Harris failed to gather the ball and Scott Bungay reacted quickest to tap home.

The Robins were unable to find a leveller as Evesham lost at home for the first time since Boxing Day.

Evesham host Exmouth on Wednesday, April 30 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Spiers and Hartwell Stadium.
