NEWLY-PROMOTED Evesham United made the perfect start to the new season with an opening day 3-1 win away at Weymouth.

Playing at Step Three for the first time in 13 years, goals from Ethan Dunbar, Josh Barlow and Levi Steele earned Evesham the points at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The result means Evesham sit third in the Southern League Premier South table.

Mike Ford’s side almost made the perfect start when Weymouth goalkeeper Ben Clark took a heavy touch with Evesham unable to capitalise.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when Dunbar smashed a shot into the back of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

And Evesham doubled their lead five minutes before half time as Barlow marked his 50th appearance for the Robins with a goal.

Weymouth halved the deficit three minutes after the break when Brandon Goodship beat Jenson Kilroy in the Evesham net.

However, the Robins restored their two-goal lead straight from the restart as Steele finished at the near post.

Evesham are next in action against Basingstoke Town on Tuesday, August 12 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Spiers and Hartwell Stadium.
