EVESHAM United skipper Amer Awadh admitted that leading his side to promotion was the best feeling in the world, writes Alex Raeburn.
The Robins ended their 13-year absence from Step Three, edging out Malvern Town 1-0 in their Southern League Division One South play-off final thanks to Levi Steele’s second half goal.
And Awadh spoke of his pride after leading the Robins to promotion as captain.
Awadh said: “There’s no better feeling. I’ve been promoted before but being a captain and leading the side to promotion is the best feeling in the world.
“It was a brilliant performance and a brilliant season for the lads. We’ve worked so hard, I’m so proud.
“If I’m completely honest, I thought we were better on the ball in the first half.
“In the second half they had some proper chances but we stayed in the game and took the one chance we had. In these sorts of games, it’s not who plays the best, it’s who wins in the end. That’s the biggest thing.”
Evesham’s play-off final win means they will now play at step three for the first time since 2012 and Awadh believes they have the quality to compete at that level.
Awadh added: “We had a bit of a slow start to this season. There was a period where we lost three games on the bounce and I think that was the biggest turning point, after that we lost one in about 20 games.
“I think the side will be good enough. We’ve got a lot of young players. We have three older ones but everyone else is under 25 so I’m looking forward to next season.”
