Fog stays away for keenly contested TEX-AM Stableford

ON A MORNING when the threatened fog never materialised, an intrepid field of 69 Vale Golf Club seniors played a TEX-AM Stableford competition in three balls on frozen temporary greens.

The unusual format, in which all second shots were played from where the best drive finished, with players then completing the hole with their own ball in the normal way, two players to score, resulted in some high scores being generated.

The winners were Andy Jinks, Mike Lewis and John Pountney with 98 points.

Runners-up were Mick Hughes, John Cockburn and Norman Cannock with 97 and third were Will Reading, Brian Leggott and John Jarvis with 96.

Nearest the pin on 14th hole was Brian Bunn.

ON A COLD but not frosty morning a field of 75 played an individual Stableford on The Vale International course.

Later starters enjoyed the best of the conditions as the weather improved and the course dried out.

Results were as follows: Division One – Nic Fielden, 41 points; Rob Sharp, 34; John Jarvis, 34.

Division Two – David Wareing, 38; Jim Knowles, 38; David Webb, 36; Patrick Staines, 34.

Division Three – Geoff Wilson, 35; Brian Leggott, 35; John Scott, 34; Andy Jinks, 33.

Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Bob Foster.
