THIRTY-TWO pairs competed in Broadway Golf Club’s popular Alex Jeffrey Salver, presented in 1974 by Susan Jeffrey in memory of her late husband.

The open mixed foursomes medal contest is always well supported. There was a stiff breeze to contend with but otherwise the weather was fair and, with the course playing superbly, the action was exciting.

An exceptional 71 nett clinched victory for Stratford pair John and Jan Clifford, whilst home players Lin Andrew and Adrian Bennett carded 72 nett to seal second place ahead of Broadway’s ladies’ captain Maggie McDivitt and husband Warren who were third with 74.

In addition to the Alex Jeffrey Salver, the Sue Carter Quaich was up for grabs on the day. The fabulous trophy was crafted and presented by Les Carter in 2011 in memory of his wife Sue and is awarded for the day’s best Stableford score.

Broadway’s Rhiannon Gadsby-Evans and partner Richard Coates from Cotswold Hills were delighted to take the Quaich home thanks to an excellent 37 points to take first place.

Visitor Stewart McKenzie had travelled from Dunning Golf Club in Perthshire to play with his daughter Fiona and did well to clinch second place with 36 points ahead of home players Ian and Judith Noyce who took third with 35.

THE SPRING Trophy, presented in 1979 by past lady member Peggy Roddick and postponed earlier in the season due to adverse weather, featured ladies competing in a par competition.

After a fine start, the low cloud began to close in and there were some unwelcome showers to contend with but this did not deter Rhiannon Gadsby-Evans who won 4 up.

Maggie McDivitt was second 2 up and Lin Andrew third all square. Veronica Rudd was 1 down and earned herself a commendable fourth.
