Festival fun puts smiles back on faces

WITH normality finally starting to return to the UK, rugby took centre stage as the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup returned at Worcester Warriors.

Sixways Stadium hosted an Under-11 and Under-12 grassroots developmental festival as youngsters at last got the opportunity to lace up their boots again, with home side Worcester among the competing teams.

This successful series of nationwide events, now running for nearly two decades and organised by Land Rover – the official vehicle of Premiership Rugby – has seen more than 100,000 children take part to date, with some realising their dreams of going on to play for Premiership Rugby clubs.

The likes of Ledbury, Drybrook, Camp Hill, and Brockworth locked horns at Warriors’ home, in a hugely competitive and enjoyable festival.

And for Worcester player Alfie Greenwood, it was a memorable experience as his side finally got back to playing following a season interrupted by lockdown.

Greenwood, 11, said: “I have been playing rugby for about three years, but this is the best day I’ve had so far.

“I’m finding it really fun, I first started playing because I enjoyed the contact side of the game. I’m looking forward to that coming back, although the touch rules we are playing today are still fun.”

The competition was a fantastic spectacle for those in attendance, with the highly competitive fixtures providing a meaningful platform for youngsters to develop their rugby skills.

The Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is testament to Land Rover’s commitment to supporting rugby at all levels; from grassroots to elite. Follow @LandRoverRugby to discover more #DiscoverRugby
