EVESHAM Velopark hosted the second round of the British Pedal Car Championship as teams travelled far and wide to compete in the six-hour race.

Some 21 human-powered cars of all different shapes, sizes and levels of engineering expertise made their way around the circuit.

And four teammates shared driving duties in each car as the top-eight finishers all covered more than 100 miles during the six-hour time limit.

The lead changed hands several times with three cars vying for the lead in the last half-hour after a couple of punctures and on-track incidents.

Royce from Bournemouth took the win just 11 seconds ahead of Wing Racers from Leighton Buzzard who finished eight seconds clear of Rugby-based Apollo Racing.

All three cars completed 280 laps totalling more than 113 miles.

In the junior classes, Swebbelli Racing from Rugby Explorer Scouts won the under-18’s race while Trinity from High Wycombe claimed the under-16’s title in their first-ever race and Upton-on-Seven Scouts won the under-14’s.

British Federation of Pedal Car Racing chairman, Jeremy Featherstone, said: “The racing left everyone breathless, physically and emotionally.

“A finish like this, closer than a lot of Grand Prix’s, shows just what a fantastic sport pedal car racing is. But this sport isn’t just about the fast guys at the front going hammer and tongs at each other.

“Where else can scouts compete against triathletes on the same circuit at the same time? Where else can a team based in a garden shed on a council estate take on a team like Royce Engineering who make components for Olympic gold medal winning cyclists?

“We had drivers from the ages of 12 right up to nearly 80, this is a sport you can enjoy at your own level. We race hard, but we race with respect and that showed through in bucketfuls.”

The British Pedal Car Championship moves onto its flagship event, The Unusual Rigging Limited Shenington 24 Hour Race in the final weekend of June.
