Evesham edged out in a mud-fest

THERE was no disgrace in defeat for Evesham who pushed promotion-chasing visitors Old Laurentians all the way before succumbing 23-20 on Saturday.

Horrendous conditions greeted the players and the match turned into a glorious mud-fest, yet the hardy souls who watched were still treated to an entertaining, traditional rugby contest.

There was almost nothing in this Midlands Two West (South) fixture, with the visitors leading 18-17 at the break. First half tries for Evesham came from Liam Berry and Zak Shotton.

Evesham dominated possession for large periods of the second half but could not turn pressure into victory.

However, a fine place kicking display by Ben Capaldi, who slotted over two conversions and two penalties, did at least help secure a hard-earned bonus point for Evesham.

The Vale side remain eighth heading into the Christmas break, confident of climbing the table in the new year, which they begin with a trip to Silhillians on January 5.
