Old Coventrians 10 Evesham 20
Midlands Three West (South)
EVESHAM cemented second place with a hard fought victory in Coventry on Saturday.
Earmarked as a huge game in both sides’ quests for promotion, the young Evesham side were not found wanting, although despite their best efforts they did miss out on securing a bonus point.
Old Covs, who last season were playing two leagues higher than Evesham, are a well-drilled and organised outfit and they fielded many new faces from the team who travelled to Blind Lane in November, including some strong ball carriers who intended to dent Evesham’s defence.
The Avonsiders stuck to their guns though, defended resiliently and were ultimately more clinical in attack as tries from Rob Wilkes, Stu Smart and Wilf Watson and a penalty from Sam Hopkins proved too much for the home side.
In the closing stages Evesham pressed for the bonus point but were unable to obtain it as Old Covs fought to the end in a fast-paced, exciting and entertaining game of rugby.
Evesham, who are a point behind leaders Southam with a game in hand, will aim to march on this weekend when mid-table Old Leamingtonians are the visitors.
Please come down and show your support for the young guns, especially as there is no Six Nations rugby.
