THERE was an impressive turnout of runners again for the annual Crowle charity 10k road race and children’s fun runs on Sunday.

Some 483 runners entered the 10k, with elite and fun runners from the three counties and beyond taking to the roads around the Bowbrook parish. There were 194 young runners in the one-mile and quarter-mile races around the village playing field.

Proceeds are still being calculated, but are likely to top £5,000, which will go towards a wide range of local causes to improve social, educational and sporting facilities in the parish.

Winner of the 10k race was Ben Carrington, 34, of Tipton Harriers in 36 minutes, 11 seconds. Rob Jones, 35, from Worcester AC was second in 37.32 and Chris Attwood of Black Pear Joggers came third with a time of 37.48.

First woman past the post was Sian Powell, 22, from Kidderminster & Stourport RC in 41.11. Runners-up positions were taken by the same athletes as last year as Helen Hawkes, 37, from Amazing Feet RC, was overall second in 42.12 and third was Sally Dring, 41, now of Black Pear Joggers who, with a time of 42.37, beat her time from last year by nearly two minutes.

In the male veteran categories, Nick Lewis of Almost Athletes was first 40+ runner in a time of 38.33. First 50+ male veteran was Leonardo Taggio of Worcester AC in 39.32 and, with an impressive time of 39.49, Derek Jackson, 66, from Black Pear Joggers was first 60+ veteran.

Winning veteran women in the 10k were Tamsin Bowden of Evesham Vale RC in 43.54 (in the 35+ category), Lindsey Lewis-Painter of Evesham Vale RC (in the 45+) in 45.14 and Alison Carr of Pershore Plum Plodders (in the 50+) in 44.01.

Alison McIndoe was the fastest female runner from Bowbrook parish and John Purves was the fastest male runner.

The two fun runs were also a big success. In the under 16s mile the winning boy was Malachi Cashmore (15), second was George Bessant, 15, and third was Samuel Lea, 13. In the girls’ under 16s mile, the winner was Lauren Kennard, 15, Katherine Burgess, 13, was second and third was Natalie Seyler, ten.

In the quarter-mile fun run, the boys’ race was won by Toby Gibson, seven, with Harry Groves, six, runner-up and Jonah Worthington, six, in third. The girls’ quarter-mile was won by Ella Purves, nine, with Daisy Fitton, eight, runner-up and Sophie Purves, seven, in third.

Organiser Caroline Brookes said: “We are delighted with the turnout for the 10k and fun runs and many thanks to everyone who supported the event.

“Some 80 residents of Crowle come together each year to make it happen and we are very grateful also for all the sponsors who provide gifts and donations.”
