CRICKET: Tongue to make Ashes debut as England opt for all-pace attack

WORCESTERSHIRE’S Josh Tongue will make his Ashes bow after being named in the side to face Australia at Lords.

The Pears pace ace replaces Moeen Ali in the XI for the second test tomorrow (Wednesday) as England seek to level the series with an all-pace attack.

Tongue will join James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson with the ball as England seek to avenge the two-wicket defeat at Edgbaston last week.

The 25-year-old marked his call up to the Ashes squad with a five-for as England beat Ireland by 10 wickets at Lords earlier this month.

The Pears pace bowler had taken the first three wickets to fall in Ireland’s second innings on Friday evening.

He followed it up on Saturday by dismissing Harry Tector and Fionn Hand to finish with figures of 21-2-66-5.

Skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum will hope Tongue continues to enjoy his debuts at international level.

In the winter picked up eight wickets on his Test debut for England Lions against Sri Lanka, including another five-for before this month’s home test success.
