ELAINE HICKIN made the right choice of clubs and showed no little skill to triumph in Broadway Golf Club’s Margaret Roberts Trophy.
Players have to select just three clubs and a putter to compete in the trophy, donated in 1961 by Margaret in her year as ladies’ captain.
Margaret originally stipulated it should be just two clubs and a putter but over the years ladies found this too challenging and in 2005 it was changed to allow an extra club.
Hickin produced a tremendous winning score of 37 point to seal a conclusive win. Diana Chambers achieved 33 points to clinch second place ahead of ladies’ captain Irene Hawkes and Angela Sollis who shared the score to take third and fourth places on countback.
Broadway’s past captains were out in fine weather later in the week to compete for The Standrink Cup. The double-handled tankard was presented in 1921 by the club’s founder Dr Charles Turner Standring who, as a touch of humour, thought the ‘Standrinks Cup’ was an appropriate name for the award going forward.
The 2002 captain Richard Rouse won with a superb 38 points ahead of 2013 captain Michael Lindner who took second place with 36 points and 2017 captain Jim Hutchison who took third place on countback.
The youngsters were out playing at the weekend on a day when summer was still in the air.
With blue skies all around and a course playing superbly, it was Will Jones who did the junior section proud by bringing in a superb 40 points to win the Centenary Trophy, presented in 1995 to mark the club’s 100th anniversary.
Jackson Wojahn-Parker achieved second place with 38 points, leaving Ryan Wright third with 37 and Joe Golding fourth with 36.
