Captain Jake leads by example in Midlands team win

EVESHAM’S Jake Lee was victorious when he represented a winning Midlands Select Team in a county match against Devon & Cornwall.

The event was held at Hotel Bristol in Newquay overlooking the seafront on the Cornish coast and the crowd were treated to a magnificent display of boxing.

The Midlands team was led by Redditch-based Nigel Lakin, who coaches at Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club, which provided five of the fighters in the visitors’ squad alongside Lee, who boxes out of Stratford & District Boxing Academy.

Having seen the Midlands team open a 1-0 lead, Lee was keen to press home his side’s advantage when he went up against fellow captain Lewis Rollinson (Falmouth).

The skippers had exchanged team vests prior to the match with a handshake and friendly smiles, but both lads looked intent on securing a point for their team with a win.

The first bell rang and Lee took centre ring and quickly got into a commanding lead with crisp combinations.

The Midlands captain was in no mood to hang around and the pressure of his attacks caused the referee to administer two standing counts during the first round.

The second round took up where the first had left off and, with only 30 seconds gone, the referee stepped in to save the brave Falmouth boxer from further punishment, resulting in a TKO win for Lee to give the Midlands a 2-0 lead.

The Midlands went on to secure a fine 5-1 overall victory and Stratford coach Jason Sumners was delighted with what he witnessed from his man.

Sumners said: “It was an outstanding performance from Jake and great preparation for the Junior Championships which he will enter this month alongside his twin brother Jordan.”
