BARB Buggin and Irene Hawkes took victory in the the final round of Broadway Golf Club Ladies’ Winter League competition.

Each of the 14 pairs had their sights set on the top spot of the 2019/20 league table and despite cool temperatures and a tricky breeze to contend with the players were determined to put in their best performance in the 16-hole Betterball contest.

Buggin and Hawkes made a sterling effort on the day to seal a decisive lead with a superb 36 points.

Debbie Donoghue and partner Cheryl Senior took a worthy second place with an excellent 35 points, ahead of Angela Sollis and Louise Folkes who recorded a healthy 33 to secure third.

Rita Harrison and Rachel Rigg did well to clinch fourth place with 32 points.

The Ladies now eagerly await the final positioning in the league table as scores are calculated, with the ultimate victors being presented with their awards at the Ladies Spring Dinner in early April.

James Waterhouse and John Richmond were triumphant in the final round of the Men’s Winter League.

There had been rain overnight with a few showers in the forecast but, as the early sun shone through, the morning soon brightened to leave conditions perfect for play for the 50 pairs.

With the players having enjoyed a full breakfast, the klaxon sounded, heralding the start of the Betterball contest.

Waterhouse and Richmond stormed to a clear victory with a tremendous 52 points. Achieving an excellent second with 49 points were Justin Loram and William Jones, ahead of Jake Norman and Keith Burton who had an excellent score of 47 points. Liam and Robert Scrivens were fourth with 46.

Final scores will now be calculated and winners will be announced at the official presentation, which will take place following the prestigious Captain versus President match in April.
