BARB BUGGIN and LOUISE FOLKES top the standings after the first round of the Broadway Golf Club ladies’ Winter League.
Competitors were treated to a mild and calm day and a course which continued to play superbly as 16 pairs began their quest for the title in the six-round challenge with the first round Better Ball.
Buggin and Folkes scored a tremendous 26 points over nine holes to seal their first round win.
Sonia Ward and Lin Everitt earned second place with an excellent 22 points, ahead of Esther Pettitt and Alison Hill in third with 21.
Clinching fourth position were Julia Fortescue and Patricia Trahar who achieved a commendable 20 points.
The spell of settled weather continued at the weekend, giving Broadway’s men the perfect start to their eight-round Winter League competition.
One of the largest fields for a number of years – 56 pairs – enjoyed an extra hour in bed courtesy of the clocks going back before embarking on an 8.30am shotgun start.
Round one was a Better Ball format and all set off with their sights set firmly on the esteemed trophy.
Keith Burton and Jake Norman were exceptional in taking first place with 49 points.
James Burke and David Sadler did well to match their score but finished second on countback.
Third were Gary Evans and Tom Roberts with 48 points, ahead of Dereck Buttler and Neil Dodgson-Hatto who were fourth on countback.
Also out at the weekend demonstrating their enthusiasm and ability were Broadway’s juniors who competed in their Winter Fun League.
All were on the tee early and, considering the damp and dreary start to the day, the scores were outstanding as Jackson Wojahn-Parker earned a remarkable 50 points including a front nine score of 27 to put him top of Division Two.
Joe Golding achieved lead position in Division One with a first class 48 points, ahead of Max Carter with 44 and Lucian Devas with 42.
Broadway GC boast a vibrant juniors section and academy coaching sessions have now begun between 10am and noon every Saturday. All are welcome to attend.
