Broadway's Lawson and McDivitt claim victory at Mercia Castle Stableford

SHEILA Lawson and Maggie McDivitt were the winners when Broadway Ladies competed over two days in the Mercia Castle Stableford.

Conditions were similar for both groups of women with the overall scores reflecting both the quality of the course and golf being played.

Taking the lead in the Silver Division was Lawson with an excellent 35 points ahead of second place Jayne Potter with 33 and Lin Andrew third with 32.

Ladies Vice-Captain, McDivitt stormed to the top of Bronze Division with a tremendous 39 points with Barb Buggin a close second with a superb 37. Fran Andrews earned a worthy third place with 34.




The best two cards in each division now go forward to County for consideration for the highest overall score in Gloucestershire and the opportunity to win the prestigious Mercia Castle Trophy.

Men’s Captain’s Day


Mark Magee and Leon Ballard rose to the challenge to win the men’s competition when Club Captain, Jim Hutchison hosted his Captain’s Day event at the weekend.

The event featured a men’s competition during the morning and a mixed in the afternoon. The day was fine but the cool breeze blew hard, making play tricky.

During the morning, the 88 strong field battled on and revived with refreshments at the half way house enjoyed the challenge of the pairs, better ball contest.

With two flag positions to aim for on the 9th and 18th greens, the Captain had given competitors a testing time but Magee and Ballard were equal to the task to record a magnificent score of 49 points for the overall win.

Bill Cook and John Richards were hot on their tails and only narrowly missed out to second with 48 and in third place were Gary Barnett and William Icke who brought in an impressive 46.

Nearest the pins in two were available on 12th & 14th and were won by Jamie Thomas and William Icke respectively.

The mixed match then began to a shot-gun start and with similar conditions the 24 pairs were keen to get out and enjoy their match which followed a similar format to the morning.

John Richards was clearly on fire as he continued his fabulous form from the morning session and along with partner Barb Buggin, strode into an unbeatable lead with an incredible 49 points.

Ian and Vicky Watkins earned second place with a splendid 43 points leaving John and Sonia Ward to clinch third with an excellent 42.

Judith Noyce achieved the nearest the pin in two on the 12th hole with John Richards getting closest on the 14th.

The Captain was delighted to announce that the fund for his chosen charity – blood cancer charity Bloodwise – had grown by a tremendous £650 on the day through generous donations and raffle sales.
