Broadway players come together for a fine cause

BROADWAY Golf Club’s ladies competed in a charity stableford to raise valuable funds for MacMillan Cancer Support.

The weather was disappointing with heavy showers throughout the morning but, showing grit and determination, all competitors battled on regardless.

There was some superb golf played, notably by winner Chris Parkinson with an excellent 34 points.

Ladies captain Maggie McDivitt headed up Division One with 32 points, ahead of second-placed Frances Friend with 29. In Division Two, Esther Pettitt clinched first place with 33, leaving Janet Sandalls second with 32.

Donations on the day amounted to £60 for the chosen charity.

The men were then out at the weekend to compete in the Joe Steward Trophy – first presented in 1993 by his wife in memory of Joe – a very well respected past Broadway member.

The 45 pairs came out to play in the better ball contest on a day which began with showers but soon dried up as the morning went on.

Despite the early rain, the course played superbly, providing some superb opportunities for scoring.

Winners of the prestigious trophies with 42 points were Richard Craig and James Waterhouse.

Gary Barnett and Matt Sollis were second with 41 on countback, ahead of Peter Azizi and Brian Campbell and juniors captain Scott Davis and Joe Golding, who finished third and fourth respectively on countback, also with 41.
