Broadway lady golfers have a busy Easter

IT WAS an extremely busy week at Broadway Golf Club which began with blustery winds and April showers, but the ladies showed their true resilience when they came out to compete in their Easter Texas Scramble.

After a shotgun start, the 14 teams began their game, optimistic the high winds might abate, but were disappointed when conditions continued to prove challenging.

Scoring was impressive, however, and with the promise of chocolate eggs for the winning teams everyone was keen to get in to see who had won.

In first place with a magnificent 73.8 points were Julia Ward, Jenny Holt, Esther Pettitt and Jo Holt.

With a superb 75, Rhainnon Gadsby-Evans took her team of Alison Hill, Janet Sandalls and Margaret Tucker into second place, leaving Henrietta Cooke, Helen Perry, Jackie Johns and Valerie de la Pena a commendable third with an excellent 75.5.

All ladies were relieved to come in to enjoy a fabulous spring dinner, ably provided as ever by Jon Hawthorne and his team.

This event heralds the beginning of the ladies’ season and is where the winners of the recently completed Winter League are announced and prizes awarded.

The six-round competition was hard fought throughout the winter months and teams battled each week to increase their scores, but there was never any doubting the final outcome as Sue Jackson and Julia Fortescue strode to victory with an incredible 157 points.

Hot on their heels throughout were Lin Everitt and Pat Green, who took a well deserved runners-up position with an impressive 152 points.

Ending the week on a real high, Broadway’s ladies then came out to compete in the third round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.

Determined to continue their winning form, the team of five took on tough opponents from Stratford-upon-Avon Golf Club.

Each of the singles matches was extremely close, but Broadway took full advantage of being at home to bring in a resounding 4-1 win.

Broadway now look forward to hearing news of their round four draw later in the month.
