THE ABUNDANCE of junior talent in the ranks at Broadway Golf Club was clear to see when youngsters contested the Swain & Spoofers Cup in the sweltering temperatures of the hottest day of the year so far.
Saturday’s competition was a combination of the Mark Swain Trophy, donated to the junior section by Ted Swain in 1983 in memory of his son Mark who had been one of Broadway’s talented junior members, and the Spoofers Cup which was donated in 1990 by members of the Friday afternoon ‘spoofers fiddle’.
The Mark Swain Cup, a gross event, was won by Sonny Nangle with a tremendous 82 (nett 70) and the Spoofers Cup for the best nett was won by James Sutherland with an excellent 72.
Kyle Wright took a deserved third place on the overall leaderboard with a nett 73, ahead of Ambrose Eaves who matched the score but finished fourth on countback.
This was just one of the many competitions run throughout the year for the junior members at Broadway. The 40-strong section are a vibrant and enthusiastic group with ages ranging from eight to 18.
They meet every Saturday at 9am and Tuesday at 5pm and junior organiser Brian Wright welcomes boys and girls of any ability to come along and join in with a host of fun and competitive golf, mixed in with some superb professional coaching. For further information, contact Brian on 07818 446067.
