BRETFORTON Ladies swept aside a depleted City Of Bath team on Saturday to record their second victory of a very tough season.

The result was made even sweeter as the Pink Ladies went behind in the first five minutes to an extraordinary opportunist goal from the visitors, whose player lifted the ball high over everyone’s heads and into hit the net.

Bret had not played since well before Christmas and it showed, as they took their time to settle and looked a little nervous.

It was down to Hayley Whitehouse to come flying off the bench to level the score with a great solo effort.

The home side then moved ahead with a short corner goal from Sophie Hamilton which was as simple as it was brilliant – a straight strike from the top of the D that seared into the net.

Bret had now found their feet and rhythm and it was the captain – Tess Lewinton – who scored not only the third goal but also a classy fourth as she sweetly connected with a rebound straight off the keeper’s pads.

The home side certainly did not have it all their own way and the City girls refused to lie down. They did their best to ruffle the Pink defence but the Bret girls at the back were in no mood to concede any more goals.

Whilst Bath chipped away, they also had not reckoned upon coming up against the Bret midfield – where player of the match Lisa Workman in particular was in inspired form – and her work alongside Amy Pinkney and Danni Cox kept the possession for the home side with ease and kept the game ticking along perfectly.

Bret’s final goal may have been a little scruffy but nobody would deny Emma Lowe more than deserved to get her name on the scoresheet for pure tenacity alone.

The Pink Ladies deserved these points but did make it hard work for themselves at times.

An away day at Cheltenham 2nds beckons on Saturday and another victory would be very welcome as they bid to climb off the foot of the table.

Thanks go to Bret’s supporters and Les for umpiring as always.
