MADISON Adkins won gold at the prestigious Haringey Box Cup under the guidance of Evesham boxing coach Mat Pickering as the young fighter showed her class at Alexandra Palace in London.
Adkins saw off the 70kg national champion and a European bronze medallist to come away with the gold medal despite moving up in weight.
And Adkins, who fights out of Stratford-upon-Avon ABC, displayed huge improvements in all areas of her game under the guidance of dedicated head coach Pickering and assistant coach Lee Johnson.
Adkins and Pickering trained relentlessly for five weeks in the build-up to the tournament as months of hard work were rewarded with a gold medal in Europe’s largest amateur boxing event.
Her father, Marcus, said: “I was elated, she put some really hard work in making the step up to youth elite level, I’m just ecstatic to see that all the hard work has paid off.
“A massive thanks to the coach Mat Pickering as well, people don’t see the amount of work and effort that goes in from not just the athletes but also the coaches.
“We went with a specific aim in mind, to win gold and to make a statement to say that we’re here and we can move up a division.
“Moving up a division was a massive jump in size but she controlled it and won gold.
“Going forward, we’ve got the senior elite’s next year and our end goal would be trying to win senior elite’s and trying to get on the GB team in the future.”
Madison is a two-time national champion and tri-nations winner and has twice represented England at the European Youth Boxing Championships.
She is now preparing for the Winter Box Cup in December later this year.
