Midlands Three West (South)
EVESHAM maintained their impressive form as they picked up a bonus point victory against their high-flying visitors on Saturday.
The Avonsiders’ third successive league win lifted them into fifth place and to within seven points of second placed Ledbury.
The game started at a frantic pace as the sides scored two tries apiece in the opening quarter, with Old Leams securing clean lineout ball and mauling over twice and Evesham scoring a driving maul of their own through Alex Tullett and a precisely executed strike move courtesy of Wilf Watson.
With the game in the balance, Evesham improved their discipline which dramatically limited Old Leams’ opportunities.
With good pressure and a perfectly executed kicking game the home side increased the pressure and from another penalty deep to the corner Stewart Smart won clean lineout ball which allowed Rob Wilkes to bundle over.
On the brink of half time a clever set piece move set James Roberts free and quick ball allowed scrum half Dan Humpston to find Ashley Icke, who crashed through two tackles on his way to scoring.
Evesham only improved in the second half as relentless defence and clinical attacking work saw Watson cross for the hosts’ fifth try.
With the game won, the travelling side desperately tried to get a foothold and this ultimately led to the game turning slightly scrappy, but valiant Evesham defence ensured Old Leams did not strike again.
On Saturday Evesham host Long Buckby in the Midlands Senior Vase quarter-final.
