EVESHAM Vale Triathlete Melanie Betts secured third place in her age group at Saturday’s Triathlon England National Middle Distance Triathlon.

‘The Vitruvian’ was the location for the national championships this year. Set in and around Rutland Water, the athletes complete a 1.9km swim, then take on a challenging but fast 85km bike course and finally a 21km run which takes you out and back twice over the iconic ‘Dambuster’ dam.

Betts completed the course in a personal best time of 5:07.29, sealing third place in the women’s 50-54-year age group.

She said: “I am really pleased with this performance. My aim was to try to get on to the podium and to do that with such a fast time was great.

“After struggling with an Achilles injury for most of last year, I finally seem to be managing to get some quality run training done and that’s starting to pay dividends.”

Betts will be representing Great Britain at the European Triathlon Championship in Ibiza in October over the same distance.

She added: “As this is my main focus for the season, Saturday’s result is promising that all is going well.”
