COUNCIL chiefs are feeling flush after cleaning up at this year’s Loo of the Year Awards which saw particular praise for Evesham’s Viaduct Meadow site.

Judges confirmed Wychavon District Council’s public toilets are far from bog standard after praising the excellent design, cleanliness and facilities on offer to people with a range of disabilities.

Wychavon’s toilets are now officially the Best Local Authority Toilets in England and the UK, while Viaduct Meadow was named as the UK’s Best Accessible Toilet in England and the UK. Church Close loos in Broadway also won the Best Toilets in a Car Park award.

Judges awarded Diamond status – the highest available – to nine of Wychavon’s loos including the newly-refurbished Waterside toilets in Evesham. Abbey Park toilets in Evesham won a platinum award and the Activity Park toilets in Broadway were given Platinum Plus.

The quality of the district’s toilets mean Wychavon now occupies top spot in the Loo of the Year Premier League, flushing away competition from entrants in both the public and private sector.

Wychavon’s success has also given it ‘Champions League Standards of Excellence’ status.

Wychavon’s most recent success adds to the two Best Public Toilets in the UK titles they won in 2014 and 2017 as well as the overall Loo of the Year trophy in 2020.

There was also success for Wychavon’s toilet cleaning contractor Mitie, who won this year’s overall Loo of the Year title.

Coun Emma Stokes, executive board member for Resident and Customer Services, said: “I’m delighted judges recognised the excellent design of our toilets, how well equipped they were and the high standard of cleanliness. I’m particularly pleased the work we have done to improve access to facilities for people with disabilities has been recognised.

“We continue to invest in our toilets to improve them further with work underway at Oat Street toilets in Evesham and more improvements planned elsewhere in the district over the next 12 months.

“A huge thank you and congratulations to our contractor Mitie for all the hard work they put in to maintaining the high standard of cleanliness enjoyed by those using our facilities.”
