Wychavon District Council marks Commonwealth Day with flag raising ceremony

THE COMMONWEALTH Flag was raised at Wychavon District Council on Monday to mark Commonwealth Day 2019.

Chairman Coun Tony Rowley raised the flag above the Council House.

It was one of similar flags flown in countries around the world as a celebration of the organisation’s values of peace, democracy and equality.

Commonwealth Day is held on the second Monday in March each year for individuals, communities and organisations to promote the values that the Commonwealth stands for.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth and the theme ‘A Connected Commonwealth’ celebrated the co-operation of nations working together in friendship and goodwill.

Coun Rowley said he was pleased to have been given the honour of raising the Commonwealth flag.

“Every year this day encourages people from all walks of life across the globe to interact with each other in order to build a more strongly connected Commonwealth that is mutually respectful, resilient, peaceful and prosperous.”
