WORK to build Evesham’s long-awaited Waitrose store will begin in less than two weeks time.

The Old Brewery Car Park will close on Saturday, May 20 with work on the new store then due to start two days later on Monday, May 22.

The public footpath that runs between Bewdley Street and Merstow Green, which was temporarily stopped up earlier this year, will remain closed until spring 2018 when the new store opens.

Residents who live close to the site will receive a flyer through their door giving them more details on the work taking place and the contractor will also be carrying out their own mailshot.

Cars in the car park need to be removed by midnight on Saturday, May 20 or they will be given a Penalty Charge Notice and may be removed.

The £10million, 18,000 sq foot store, which is being built on the site of the former fire station, is expected to create 150 new jobs.

Archaeological investigations of the site will also be taking place next Tuesday (May 16) and anything of interest discovered will be reported, Wychavon District Council has said.

Vic Allison, Deputy Managing Director at Wychavon, said “These works signal the start of a very exciting time for Evesham.

“This investment will create up to 150 new jobs, will attract shops to the town and will reinvigorate the town with increased footfall.

“We appreciate and apologise for the short term inconvenience to residents and businesses, but we hope people will appreciate that there are significant long term benefits for everyone.

“As well as keeping residents up to date on the progress with the site, staff have also been working with traders to ensure they’re kept up to date and offered any support they need.”
