A FITNESS programme for young people across Herefordshire and Worcestershire has been shortlisted for a national award.

The School Fitness Festival, launched in 2024, is a collaboration between Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, The Academy Programme and British Weightlifting.

The scheme gives students from underserved communities the chance to learn about the benefits of functional fitness in specialist gym spaces, supported by expert trainers.

It has been named a finalist in the Young Person Impact category at the Your School Games Impact Awards.

Four schools in the two counties have also secured equipment through the Opening School Facilities Fund for functional fitness or weightlifting equipment.

Kerrie O’Mahony, strategic lead for children and young people at Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said the recognition was “incredibly special” and praised the strong partnership working behind the programme.

Hannah Mittoo, co-founder and director of The Academy Programme, added: “We believe the lessons learned inside the gym walls can transcend far beyond the gym doors, building confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.”

The winners of the School Games Impact Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
