Woman dies after being pulled out of the river

Evesham Editorial 8th Aug, 2019   0

A WOMAN in her 60s has died after being pulled from the river at an Evesham beauty spot.

Emergency services were called to Hampton Ferry at about 6pm on Saturday (August 3) after the alarm was raised following reports the woman had gone into the river.

A major search was launched with police officers seeking help from those on and around the water before divers took to the scene.

Firefighters later pulled the woman from the water and she was taken to the Worcestershire Royal in a critical condition where she was pronounced dead.

A devastated witness who didn’t wish to be named, said: “It was just heart-breaking to see the efforts to find this poor woman, locals were putting their own safety to one side to join the search.”

“I’ve never seen so many police and emergency services this close to the ferry and it’s just so sad their efforts couldn’t save her.

“My thoughts go out to her family, may she rest in peace.”

Supt Edd Williams from West Mercia Police said: “Officers were made aware of concerns for the welfare of a woman in her 60s in Church Road in Evesham at around 1.40pm today (Saturday).

“At around 5.45pm the woman is reported to have entered the river. Emergency services attended and the woman was recovered from the water.

“She was taken to hospital by ambulance but subsequently died. Her next of kin is aware.”

Police confirmed the death is not currently being treated suspicious.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We were called to a location near to Raphael’s restaurant on Hampton Ferry just before 6pm on Saturday to reports of a woman in the water.

“We sent the Midlands Air Ambulance and two ambulances.”
