Wintry weather on way to Vale

THE MET Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow across Worcestershire.

Showers of hail, sleet and snow on Tuesday (January 13) evening could leave a covering of 3cm to 6cm in places, especially on higher ground.

A yellow warning has also been issued for ice with forecasters suggesting residents should be aware of the risk of tricky driving conditions.

The latest forecast for Evesham by the Met Office suggests suggests light snow could fall from this evening into the early hours.

Gritting teams will be out across the county’s roads ahead of sub-zero temperatures and potential snowfall.

Crews are set to go out from 5pm today (Tuesday) to cover more than 1,300 miles of designated route.

They will then be on standby throughout the night with ‘back to black’ ploughs fitted ready to go out again as needed.

It comes as road temperatures are set to drop as low as -3 overnight with possibly between one and three centimetres of snow falling on higher ground.

Extra teams are also set to be on standby from tomorrow (Wednesday) when rainfall and winds are likely, with extra gully emptiers and tree removal contractors potentially needed.

Coun John Smith, responsible for highways at Worcestershire County Council, said: “The crews are heading out to treat all designated routes early this evening ahead of road temperatures dipping. At the moment, snowfall levels for Worcestershire are relatively low but we’ll have officers monitoring the latest forecasts through the night and, if needed, the gritters will go out with the latest ‘back to black’ ploughs fitted.

“I’d encourage anyone making journeys to take care. Please don’t take risks. It’s just not worth it. Grit has never been a miracle cure, so, as always, the message is it’s never safe to assume you can travel at normal speeds even if you think a

highway has been treated.”
