Why Wychavon is waving the flag to support the Commonwealth

THE COMMONWEATH flag was raised by Wychavon as part of a ceremony of dedication to mark Commonwealth Day 2022.

Last Monday (March 14), the flag was raised outside the Civic Centre in Pershore joining more than 1,000 other Commonwealth Flags being flown in Commonwealth countries around the world.

Commonwealth Day is an opportunity for individuals, communities and organisations to promote the values of peace, democracy and equality that the Commonwealth stands for.

The theme this year was ‘Delivering a Common Future’ – which highlights how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are innovating, connecting and transforming, to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade.

There is also a special focus this year on the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth, in recognition of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Before the flag was raised, Coun Robert Raphael, chairman of Wychavon District Council, read out a special Commonwealth Affirmation. The statement reaffirmed the commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity.

“I am pleased once again we are supporting Commonwealth Day by raising the Commonwealth Flag. This day is an opportunity to promote the peace, democracy and equality that the flag represents and to strengthen the connection between Wychavon and the Commonwealth communities.”
