WEST Mercia Police officers and staff have taken part in a host of events aimed at driving forward race equality.

Over the past week West Mercia Police officers and staff have taken part in a host of events aimed at driving forward race equality.

The events, held as part of Race Equality Week, saw officers and staff increase their knowledge and understanding to encourage positive action to drive change and tackle race inequality.

Launched by community interest company Race Equality Matters, the initiative aims to turn words into meaningful action.

This year’s theme was ‘ItsEveryonesBusiness #ActionDrivesChange.

A key aim is to improve legitimacy and increase trust and confidence across the whole community in West Mercia’s commitment to achieve a quality policing service that protects people from harm and keeps communities safe.

Chief Inspector Peter Kitosi-Isanga, West Mercia Police’s lead on equality, diversity and inclusion, said: “We’re committed to being an inclusive force that strives to represent and protect our whole community and we were incredibly proud to play an active role in Race Equality Week.

“We know people within our minority communities have significantly lower levels of trust and confidence in policing and while we know we have taken great strides to make improvements, it is important we do more.

“This annual event unites thousands of organsations UK-wide in action to address race inequality in both the workplace and society as a whole.

“It aims to heighten our collective consciousness of the racism, inequality and injustice experienced by ethnically diverse communities.

“Initiatives such as this help us to break down barriers to driving race equality by understanding what it feels like to be in someone else’s shoes and understanding what it means to be positively inclusive, even slight changes can make a real difference.”

Race Equality Week consisted of a five-day challenge for the whole organisation to get involved.
