We’re using water faster than it can be treated, warn Severn Trent

PEOPLE are using up water supplies faster than Severn Trent can treat it and put it into the system.

The news comes as the region basks in the hottest June for 40 years,

The water company has confirmed that water usage has increased significantly.

It said customers are using millions of litres more water every single day and they are asking gardeners to put their sprinklers away, for people to use the shower instead of a bath and to avoid washing cars.

Severn Trent says although water supplies are healthy demand is so heavy there’s a risk of areas being hit by low water pressure, particularly during peak demand.

Water needs to be treated through its treatment works before it is pumped back into supply.

However as fast as this is being done it is being used by customers.

The company says it has increased its production capacity by millions of extra litres a day, but it’s also asking to customers to use their water carefully.

Spokesman Doug Clarke said: “Demand for water is massively up and while we have lots of water available and our reservoir levels are healthy, people are using water as fast as we can treat and pump it into supply.

“This is particularly the case during peak demand in the morning and evenings when we want to ask customers to restrict their supply so we can avoid areas of low pressure.

“We know how tempting it is to fill the paddling pool up, or get the sprinkler going, but to put things into perspective, a sprinkler can use as much as 1,000 litres of drinking water in just one hour.

“We urge everyone to play their part and be extra careful with their water, especially during peak times.”
