PERSHORE’S MP Harriett Baldwin has praised big-hearted local people who have come forward to offer homes and support for people fleeing the war in Ukraine.
The West Worcestershire MP is working closely with the Home Office on more than 100 cases of women and children who are completing the process of permanently moving to the area.
The MP has also spoken to town mayors and religious leaders who are co-ordinating the efforts of dozens of local people who have offered to house refugees.
Mrs Baldwin is also working closely with the Polish Parliament to smooth the access of Ukrainians who want to come to the UK.
“The sheer volume of people offering to help has been overwhelming, and I and my team are working flat out to help to chase applications which are being processed by the Home Office,” Mrs Baldwin said.
“The absolute priority is that Ukrainians should get to somewhere safe and countries like Poland have done an incredible job providing a safe haven for refugees.
“Some have plans for an onward destination and some would dearly like to return home and my fervent hope is that this terrible war comes to an end and Putin faces the consequences of this illegal action in an international court.
“But while war continues, West Worcestershire is opening its arms to people who want to relocate here and I am busy both helping with individual applications and the community groups who have come forward to help.
“It is right that we respond positively to this international crisis, and I have raised issues with Ministers to make sure that the process is an uncomplicated as possible.
“West Worcestershire wants to be a good neighbour to our friends in Ukraine and I strongly feel that, as the process is ramped up, we will be able to welcome many more refugees to our lovely county.”
