YOUNGSTERS at a Pinvin school learned it was cool to rap following a poetry masterclass from former Birmingham Poet Laureate ‘Spoz’.

Giovanni Esposito visited St Nicholas CE Middle School and brought out the best poetry slamming techniques of year seven pupils at a day-long workshop.

Pupils worked in teams of three to seven to write their own poems on the theme of ‘It’s good to be me’ and the What are you saying, ABC team won the competition to find the best slam poem.

The youngsters will now represent the school at the Midlands Middle Schools Poetry Slam finals at the Palace Theatre, Redditch in April.

Assistant headteacher, Bex Chatterton, said: “Poetry Slamming with Spoz is an eagerly anticipated activity in the school calendar, especially the boys, who relish the modern, free way that slamming allows them to make up their own poetry.
