Weeping Window on show as Pershore remembers

Evesham Editorial 7th Nov, 2021   0

THE WEEPING Window of Poppies is once again on display at St Andrew’s Parish Centre in Pershore as a poignant reminder of Remembrance.

2021 is another prominent year for Pershore during Remembrance for not only is it 100 years since the Royal British Legion formed but November 1 marked exactly 100 years since the Town’s War Memorial was unveiled inside Pershore Abbey.

Under the Chairmanship of Lt Col A H Hudson who lost 2 sons during the First World War, a committee of stalwarts led a fundraising campaign to build a permanent memorial to all who fell during the conflict. It was decided to commission Alfred Drury RA to design and create the sculpture which he stated represented a “Figure of Immortality holding a wreath in one hand and a Palm branch in the other”

In a special Evensong Service held at 3pm on All Saints Day (1st November) 1921, Veterans, grieving relatives and sponsors gathered in the Abbey for the official unveiling by the 9th Earl of Coventry, Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary, a special video was made for the Pershore Abbey’s YouTube Channel and a quiet wreath laying ceremony took place at the memorial.

Rev Claire Lording read prayers from the 1921 Order of Service before the Town’s poppy cross was laid at the memorial by Centenarian Veteran Harold Wilson along with wreaths laid by the Deputy Mayor of Pershore and Chairman of the RBL.

Visitors to the Abbey over the next couple of weeks will find a display by the Memorial showing copies of documents and photographs from the archives.
