Walk celebrates ramblers’ 70th

Rob George 14th Sep, 2018   0

A NEW walk around Evesham has been unveiled to mark seven decades since the town’s rambling club was formed and walkers are being invited to pull on their shoes this weekend to try it out.

The full walk is five miles long and starts at the Almonry where ramblers can follow the distinctive ‘Round Evesham Walk’ discs. There are also additional link paths and shortcuts along the route. Evesham’s battle trail is included and an extension path leads to the Leicester Tower and the Obelisk.

The route was formed as a result of the Evesham Town Plan, following residents’ wishes for the town to improve access to the river as well as highlighting the local heritage.

Members of Evesham Rambling Club devised the route with backing from Worcestershire County Council, Wychavon District Council and Evesham Town Council as well as local landowners who have allowed public access over parts of the land to complete the circuit.

The ERC was founded in 1947 by Dudley Hughes and Leon Butler and has since developed a remarkable archive, detailing all of the walks and meetings along with a collection of historical photographs.

Club spokesperson Clive Bostle said: “We’ve been working hard to ensure the path successfully highlights the best of Evesham’s assets and takes visitors and residents through some of the town’s historical high points. Every member is looking forward to the route’s launch, and hope it will be a great addition to the town.”

The Round Evesham Walk launch event will be held on Sunday (September 16) from 2pm and followed by a guided walk. Everyone is welcome and can choose between doing the full route or just a shorter section.

Walkers can pick up a leaflet and map for free from the Almonry, the library and Evesham Community Contact Centre or online at www.eveshamramblingclub.org.uk/rew
