CONSTRUCTION of Evesham’s £10million Waitrose store is ‘progressing well’ and is still due to open its doors in March next year.
Builders from Midas Retail Limited moved on site back in June to construct the 28,145 sq ft store on Merstow Green after the town’s former fire station was demolished.
Wychavon District Council is funding the project and the authority will make its money back with Waitrose renting the building on a 20 year lease.
The new store is expected to create 150 jobs when it opens in March next year.
Construction is gathering pace on the build, with the steel structure already in place and roofing works under way. Builders are expected to begin the cladding works in the next few weeks.
David Rowe, Director at Midas Retail, part of the Midas Group, said: “We are delighted to be working on this important project in Evesham for Wychavon District Council and to be working again with Waitrose on delivering another new store.
“Work on site is progressing well, with steelwork now almost complete and roofing work under way. We expect to be starting cladding works in the next couple of weeks.”
Speaking in June, Vic Allison, deputy managing director at Wychavon District Council, said he hopes the new store will help boost Evesham’s economy.
“We’ve already seen the benefits that having a Waitrose store in town brings from the impact of the Droitwich scheme, so we’re confident Evesham will benefit in a similar way,” he said.
