Volunteers sought for group

Evesham Editorial 5th Aug, 2018   0

FUND-RAISERS are being sought join a new fundraising group which has launched to support Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

The founding members of the Alzheimer’s Research UK Evesham and Pershore District Fund-raising Group – the charity’s first group in Worcestershire – have plans underway for events and activities and are looking for new members with a range of skills to join the team to raise vital funds and awareness for dementia research.

Members can get involved in fundraising challenges and activities to raise money for pioneering research, represent Alzheimer’s Research UK at events and spread the word about the charity within their local community.

The leader of the group is Pam Foley, who first got involved in fund-raising for the charity last year and has so far raised around £2,000.

Pam, who lives in Fladbury near Pershore said: “I have an interest in making craft items and I wanted to make things and sell them for charity. I saw a flyer promoting the importance of dementia research and that inspired me to support Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“I hosted a coffee morning and ran some craft stalls and then was encouraged to take up an opportunity to do a sky dive. At the age of 66 I did it. What an experience!”

“It is a hugely worthwhile charity. There is a great need to support dementia research and help fight this devastating condition.”

Members of the new group have already organised their first events. There will be a quiz evening at the Anchor Inn in Fladbury on Tuesday at 7.30pm and the landlord, Simon Stephenson, will be donating the proceeds to Alzheimer’s Research UK.

They will then be hosting a coffee and chat event at Fladbury Church on October 13, 10.30am to 12pm. There will be a variety of stalls with craft items and information about dementia. They are also planning a stall at the Christmas craft fair at Fladbury village hall on November 17 as well as running stalls at various fetes in the area.

Alzheimer’s Research UK regional groups play a crucial part in the fight against dementia, which currently affects over 850,000 people across the UK. There are around 9,000 people with dementia in Worcestershire, which is around 15 per cent higher per head of the population than the national average.

Zoe Baggott, Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Regional Fundraising Officer for the West Midlands, said: “We are delighted that the Evesham and Pershore District group has been launched and we look forward to welcoming more members.

“Alzheimer’s Research UK’s vision is a world free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia and our supporters are key to helping us bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025.”
